"When is my Alfa's cambelt due?" is one of the most common questions Alfa Romeo owners ask, and one of the most important. Get it wrong on a belt-driven engine and a snapped belt can cause major engine damage.

Here's a plain-English guide by model.

Important: intervals vary by engine, year and how the car is used. Always check your service book, or ask us to check your exact car by registration.

Alfa Romeo models with a cambelt (timing belt)

Giulietta and MiTo, 1.4 TB and 1.4 MultiAir petrol

Manufacturer interval: around 5 years or 72,000 miles, whichever comes first. Many specialists, us included, recommend 4 years or 60,000 miles for extra peace of mind, as these engines are interference designs.

Giulietta 1.75 TBi (Quadrifoglio Verde / Veloce)

This engine is also belt-driven. Treat it with the same care, and replace the tensioner and water pump at the same time.

Giulietta, MiTo, 159 and Brera, JTDm diesel

The diesels are belt-driven too, with a typical interval of 5 years or 60,000 to 72,000 miles depending on engine. High-mileage drivers usually reach it on miles well before the time limit.

Older models (147, GT, 156, 159 petrol)

The Twin Spark and JTS engines have a reputation for being very sensitive to belt age. If you own one of these classics and don't have proof of a recent belt change, we'd treat it as urgent. The same goes for variator and tensioner condition on Twin Spark engines.

Alfa Romeo models with a timing chain

Giulia and Stelvio, 2.0 petrol and 2.2 diesel

These engines use a timing chain, so there's no routine cambelt change. Chains are designed to last much longer but are very sensitive to oil quality. Sticking to service intervals with the correct oil is the best protection.

Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio, 2.9 V6

Also chain-driven. These cars do have an accessory drive belt service that should be done on schedule, as it involves a fair amount of labour.

Tonale

The Tonale's petrol-hybrid engines use a different engine family. Ask us for specific guidance for your version.

Why change the water pump and tensioner too?

On most Alfa belt engines the water pump is driven by the cambelt. A failed pump or seized tensioner can take out a brand-new belt. Because the labour is the same, replacing them together is the sensible, cost-effective option.

How much does an Alfa Romeo cambelt change cost?

It depends on the engine. Some are much more involved than others. As independent Alfa specialists, our prices are well below main dealers and we use OE-quality kits. Ask us for a quote.

Signs your cambelt may be failing

Most belts give no warning at all before they fail, which is why you should change them on time rather than waiting for symptoms. If you hear squealing, ticking or whirring from the front of the engine, get it checked straight away.
