Can you service a car under warranty at an independent garage in the UK? Yes, and here's what you need to know to keep your warranty and service history safe.

Short answer: no. In the UK you can have a car serviced by an independent garage during its manufacturer warranty, provided the work follows the manufacturer's schedule and uses parts of matching quality.
This is one of the questions we're asked most, especially by owners of newer Alfa Romeos and Abarths. Here's how it works.
Do I have to use a main dealer while my car is under warranty?
No. UK competition rules (the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption) stop manufacturers from making warranty cover depend on servicing at their own dealers. You're free to choose where your car is maintained.
For the warranty to stay valid, the garage needs to:
Follow the manufacturer's service schedule for your model, mileage and age.
Use original or matching-quality parts and the correct fluids, such as the specified grade of engine oil.
Record the work properly so there's a clear paper trail.
What does "matching-quality parts" mean?
It means parts made to the same specification and standard as the ones fitted at the factory. They don't have to come in a manufacturer-branded box, but they must be equivalent. At AR Autos we use OE or OE-matching parts and the oils Alfa Romeo and Abarth specify, so there's no doubt.
Will my car still get a stamp in the service book?
Yes. We stamp paper service books and give you a detailed invoice listing every part and fluid used. Keep these together, as they're your proof of servicing if you ever need to make a warranty claim or sell the car.
What about recalls and warranty repairs?
Recalls and repairs covered by the warranty are paid for by the manufacturer and have to be carried out by a franchised dealer. Using an independent garage for routine servicing doesn't affect this. We'll let you know if we see an outstanding recall on your car so you can get it booked in.
